What We Offer

  • Integrative medicine is an approach to care that puts the patient first. Unlike conventional medicine which focuses on disease, integrative medicine focuses on all the aspects of a patient's life—physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and environmental—that contribute to a patient's health and well-being. As functional medicine practitioners, we focus on identifying the root cause of symptoms and taking things a step further to identify which other systems may be involved. We use natural treatments, when appropriate, and take our patient's values and preferences into consideration at all times.

  • At Maine Coast Midwives & Medicine, we treat a variety of different hormonal conditions including endometriosis, PCOS, irregular cycles, perimenopause, fibroids and more. All of these conditions are complex and require a multifaceted approach and conventional medicine offers little in the way of curative treatments.

  • Struggling with infertility can be one of the most difficult challenges many couples will face. Although the CDC reports approximately 15% of couples struggle with infertility, because many couples do not seek professional help or are hesitant to discuss the topic, in reality the number may be much higher. Whether you have been attempting to conceive for 3 months, 3 years or longer, there is much that can be done to increase a person or couple's chances of having a healthy baby.

  • Thyroid disorders are under diagnosed and often mismanaged, not to mention the conventional thyroid hormone ranges are quite broad and do not result in optimal thyroid functioning. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (an autoimmune thyroid disease) is also often missed and can greatly affect people’s quality of life, regardless as to whether hypothyroidism is present or not.

  • HPV, or human papilloma virus, is a sexually transmitted virus that, in certain cases, has the ability to progress to cervical dysplasia—the presence of abnormal cells on the cervix—or, in rare cases, progress to cervical cancer. Conventional treatment for cervical dysplasia involves watching and waiting, and sometimes performing a LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) that uses a thin, low-voltage wire to remove abnormal tissue (and along with it, normal tissue as well). Scaring is a potential result, and the procedure does not treat the underlying cause of the abnormal cells: the HPV infection itself.

For this reason, some women choose to pursue alternatives to conventional treatments for cervical dysplasia and HPV. Alternative treatment commonly consists of an anti-viral protocol and, depending on the case, local treatment to the cervix itself. Escharotic treatment involves the application of natural substances that cause the abnormal tissue to die and slough off. These treatments are commonly performed 2 times a week for 5 to 6 weeks. Herbal and vitamin suppositories are also used to aid in the regrowth of normal tissue. Despite this being a somewhat time consuming procedure, many women find it gentler and more effective than a LEEP, with little risk of the formation of scar tissue.

  • There is a significant amount of conflicting information available on the risks and benefits of vaccines, when vaccines should be administered, how many vaccines may safely be administered in one visit, and what ingredients are actually contained within certain vaccines. Navigating the world of vaccines can be quite confusing and many parents feel conflicted as to whether they are making the best decision for their child. In our 45-minute vaccine consultation, we provide parents with accurate information about vaccines, answer any questions you may have, and discuss a personalized vaccine schedule for your child, should that be your wish. Parents who opt for a personalized vaccine schedule will receive one within 1 week of their initial consultation.

  • Addressing the cause of the symptoms you are experiencing often means doing some digging, so to speak. While conventional medical labs are useful for some conditions, newer forms of laboratory testing allow us to gain a lot more information about your body and health status. We use comprehensive lab testing, when necessary, to gain more information regarding nutrient status, detoxification pathways, digestive health and food allergies and sensitivities, genetic variations, hormone levels, chemical and heavy metal burden, and neurotransmitters, to name a few. Some of the labs we offer include:

    FOOD ALLERGY & SENSITIVITY TESTING
    AGING & ANTIOXIDANT STATUS
INTESTINAL & DIGESTIVE HEALTH (LEAKY GUT & CANDIDA)
    MTHFR, COMT & GENETIC TESTING
    SMALL INTESTINAL BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH (SIBO)
    HORMONE TESTING
    STOOL & PARASITE TESTING
    HEAVY METAL TESTING
    COMPREHENSIVE NUTRITIONAL STATUS TESTING
    ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANT TESTING
    NEUROTRANSMITTER TESTING
    PREVENTATIVE LAB TESTING
